by Mouse! Saunders ![]() Ready, Set, Go! The Texas Motor Speedway was in full swing, with top NASCAR racers hitting the track. Then a severe storm touched down in Dallas, Texas. The tornado had swept through, causing significant damage. Some had raced that day; others had races the following day. Meanwhile, an 83- year-old man was overwhelmed by the debris and fallen trees throughout his yard. Some Christian organizations stepped up to get help for this man and his damaged home and property. At a moment's notice, five Christian drivers volunteered and hit the ground running. The team chaplain marveled, "They worked like a pit crew; I've never seen people work so hard and fast. It seemed like about 20 seconds to do it all!" They were not necessarily prepared, but they were ready. One driver wore custom ostrich skin boots, trudging through mud and debris. Another, carrying branches, slipped down an embankment, taking out his rear bumper. Still, another driver was confident and said, "We're race car drivers; we like to get down and dirty." The driver, who seemed to have it together, had just lost his sponsor due to his Christian faith. Yet another, who had won his race the night before and had very little sleep, ran straight into a branch with his face. Yet, what they all held in common at that moment was the reassurance of their faith in salvation and a desire to be the hands and feet of Jesus. The older man, a big NASCAR fan, didn't recognize the drivers as they met his physical needs of clearing his home. However, as the drivers continued in the work at hand, he began to open up to a volunteer husband and wife couple, sharing on a more personal level. They took this opportunity to ask him if he had lost his life in the tornado if he would be assured of going to heaven. His response, "I don't know." On the porch of his damaged home, the couple led the man in a prayer to receive Jesus. As the NASCAR drivers learned of this man's salvation, they were overwhelmed with gratitude. They noticed the other houses in the neighborhood were untouched by the tornado. They marveled at God's perfect plan to allow the storm to pass in such a way to bring about His purpose and draw people to Himself. God reveals His power and shows it's never too late to receive His free gift of salvation. Acts 1:8 says "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." Like these drivers in the story, we may not always be prepared, but we must be ready. We need to receive salvation and work through it. Be ready to answer everyone who asks about your hope and follow the example of our Lord, Jesus, by serving others. We need to get set. Just as we do not know the day or hour of our King's return, we must stand firm in our faith. The Bible calls us to study God's Word, not be ashamed, leaning into complete comprehension. As we do this, we are given the opportunities to fulfill our calling. Go! Time to get out and share the good news! Jesus gives us the command to make disciples. He has given us the power of the Holy Spirit to be His witnesses. We are to be bold in our testimony, inviting everyone to hear His story. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, but while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. He was buried in a tomb and rose from the grave! We serve a risen Saviour! As we continue through this week leading to Resurrection Sunday, reflect on Jesus' betrayal, torture, His crucifixion, His forgiveness of us, when we didn't know what we were doing, His death, burial, and ultimate proof of His sovereignty as Lord of Lords and King of Kings in His resurrection, may we be compelled to be Ready, Set & Go!
